“Sew you want to be a Fashion Designer” (TM) Introduction

Before I wanted to be a fashion designer I wanted to be an architect. I was helping my father build our house that was built by the Johanna Construction Company (that was me). Like a lot of little girls I made doll clothes for my doll collection but I was also a tomboy. After that phase was over in 7th grade I found out I liked to design my prom dresses. Since my mother had been in the dance world she would make special dresses for me to wear that I designed. Needless to say my dresses were outstanding, with lots of fabric in the full skirts we wore in those days. I kept designing and learned how to sew in high school. When I entered Washington University my first teacher was a very strict seamstress that showed us factory style sewing machines that we were to use. They were so fast we were all shocked. But I did learn to use them and it was a good thing. When I started my first job I could show my seamstresses how to make something that I designed . It was my first experience working with professional seamstresses. They were fast and very good at what they did. I never doubted their skills. I set up my design department in Florida the same way.

  1. Terrific story! I was always intimidated by the speed of industrial machines too.

I’d never thought of it before, but fashion design is a rather like architecture. So many things you need to understand in order to construct a building (or a garment) that stands stable against the forces of gravity and wear.

    1. I have always thought that a good fashion designer could build a garment themselves if they had to. So that makes them an engineer or an architect as well as a designer.

  2. Your story is so interesting–you discovered your talents early and decided to develop those talents. Your style is conversational and easy to read. Keep up the good work!

  3. Good web site! I really love how it is simple on my eyes and the data are well written. I’m wondering how I could be notified when a new post has been made. I have subscribed to your feed which must do the trick! Have a great day!

  4. I’ve been browsing on-line greater than three hours today, but I by no means discovered any interesting article like yours. It is pretty price enough for me. Personally, if all site owners and bloggers made excellent content as you did, the net will likely be a lot more helpful than ever before.

    1. I am back from a trip to Phoenix and am preparing to put some instructions on pinterest, so I can receive more comments and web looks for. Like I said since I have a history of teaching instructions to share . One of the first will be underesting buttons. Check my site again Thanks for comments before
